Bible Study- Gospel According to Luke Chpt 1: 57-80

Hey everyone, Ryan here! Welcome back to our series on the Gospel according to Luke. Today, we’ll be examining Chapter 1, beginning with verse 57. Let’s dive right in!

The Birth of John the Baptist

Starting in verse 57:

“Now Elizabeth’s full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son. When her neighbors and relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they rejoiced with her.” (Luke 1:57-58)

This moment is significant for Elizabeth, who is well past childbearing age. Throughout her life with Zachariah, they likely experienced the heartache of not being able to have children. It's reasonable to assume that they tried for years, facing the societal pressures and personal disappointments that come from such struggles. The joy of having a son brings incredible relief and a sense of redemption for her.

Thinking back to the stories of women like Sarah, who also faced barrenness, we can appreciate the depth of this blessing for Elizabeth. This event not only removed her reproach among her community but also echoes the great mercy God extends to those who believe.

The Naming of John

Continuing in verse 59:

“So it was, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child. They would have called him by the name of his father, Zachariah. His mother answered and said, ‘No, he shall be called John.’” (Luke 1:59-60)

In Jewish tradition, naming was highly significant, often reflecting family lineage and heritage. Elizabeth’s insistence on the name "John," as instructed by the angel, was a bold statement, especially since none of her relatives were named John. This highlights her obedience to God’s plan.

When they turn to Zachariah to confirm the name, we see his response in verse 63:

“And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, ‘His name is John.’ So they all marveled.” (Luke 1:63)

As soon as he confirms the name, his speech is restored. This moment serves as a reminder of the power of God’s promises and the affirmation of John’s significance.

Zachariah’s Prophecy

Once Zachariah is able to speak, he prophesies about his son, John:

“Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David.” (Luke 1:68-69)

Zachariah acknowledges the fulfillment of God’s promises through Jesus, setting the stage for John's pivotal role as the forerunner to the Messiah. Through this prophecy, Zachariah reflects on the long-awaited hope of Israel:

“To grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.” (Luke 1:74-75)

John’s role is outlined beautifully:

“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways.” (Luke 1:76)

Here, Zachariah emphasizes that John’s mission is not only to announce the coming Messiah but also to bring knowledge of salvation to the people.

The Significance of John’s Birth

As we look at this passage, it’s clear that John the Baptist is a crucial figure in the narrative of Jesus's life and ministry. His role as the prophet, preparing the way for the Savior, cannot be overstated.

Zachariah continues:

"Through the tender mercy of our God, with which the Dayspring from on high has visited us; To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." (Luke 1:78-79)

John’s birth signifies the dawning of hope and the light that will come through Jesus. These powerful words encapsulate the essence of the new covenant that is beginning to unfold.

Conclusion

The chapter concludes with:

“So the child grew and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.” (Luke 1:80)

John’s early life and preparation in the wilderness foreshadow the important role he will play in revealing Jesus as the Messiah.

About Me

Bible N3rd Pic.jpg

I started the fullness of my walk with Christ in 2017.  I can't believe how much it has changed my life and still how far I want to go.  I was never a "reader" but some chains fell off my life and I have spent so much of my time studying and learning.  It got to the point where I wanted to engage and share what I have made into a passion.  That is where this all started and I can't wait to see where God takes it!
