Holy Week- Good Friday

Good Friday
Good Friday

As we arrive at Day 6 of our Holy Week reflections, we confront one of the most somber days in the Christian calendar: Good Friday. This day is marked by the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, a pivotal moment in biblical history, filled with profound implications for humanity. Join me, Ryan, your Bible nerd guide, as we navigate the scriptures that recount these harrowing events.

The Significance of Good Friday

The term "Good Friday" can seem paradoxical to many, as the day commemorates the brutal and agonizing death of Jesus. Yet, the moniker "good" encapsulates the belief that even through the depths of evil and suffering, God transforms circumstances for a greater good. The beauty of redemption, the possibility of forgiveness, and the proliferation of hope are all present in the narrative of Good Friday.

Jesus Before Pilate

As we delve into the scriptures, we begin with the trial of Jesus before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. In Matthew 27:11-14, Jesus stands accused by the chief priests and elders, yet He remains largely silent amidst their accusations. Pilate, perplexed by Jesus's demeanor, marvels that He answers nothing significant to the charges laid against Him.

In Mark 15:1-5, the narrative follows similarly, illustrating Pilate's struggle to understand the reasons for this trial. Pilate’s interactions reveal his acknowledgment of Jesus's innocence, but he finds himself caught in the politically charged atmosphere of the Passover festival, where tensions run high, and the Jewish leaders seek to dispose of Jesus.

Dialogue Between Jesus and Pilate

John’s account in John 18:28-40 offers a deeper look into the dialogue between Jesus and Pilate. Here, Jesus states that His kingdom is not of this world, a powerful assertion that foreshadows His ultimate sacrifice. Pilate's question, "What is truth?" encapsulates the philosophical and moral dilemmas he faces, unable to grasp the significance of the man standing before him.

The Mockery and Scourging

After the trial, the brutal treatment of Jesus begins. In Mark 15:16-20, soldiers mock Him, dressing Him in a purple robe and placing a crown of thorns on His head. The ridicule, physical assault, and humiliation serve as a prelude to the crucifixion, revealing the depths of human depravity and the extent of Jesus's suffering.

The culpability of this violence weighs heavily on the narrative, emphasizing the stark contrast between Jesus's innocence and humanity's sinful nature.

The Crucifixion

As we approach the crucifixion, the Gospels paint a vivid picture of the events surrounding this pivotal moment. In Luke 23:32-49, we see the moment Jesus is led to Golgotha, the place of the skull. The mocking, the scorn, and the cruel treatment culminate in His being placed on the cross, flanked by two criminals.

While on the cross, Jesus offers a final act of compassion, asking the Father to forgive those responsible for His suffering, as stated in Luke 23:34. This powerful moment demonstrates His boundless love and compassion, even in His agony.

The Moment of Death

As darkness descends on the land, Jesus's final words echo throughout history. In Matthew 27:46, He cries out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" This poignant expression of abandonment resonates deeply, shedding light on the weight of the sins He bears for humanity's sake.

In John 19:28-30, Jesus ultimately declares, "It is finished." His death signifies the completion of His redemptive mission, fulfilling prophecies and establishing a new covenant between God and humanity.

Reflection on Good Friday

As we reflect on the profound sorrow of Good Friday, it is essential to remember that this day is not solely about suffering; it's about the hope that arises from sacrifice. Jesus's crucifixion paves the way for forgiveness, reconciliation, and salvation.

We are reminded that even in our darkest moments, there is hope for redemption and healing. Good Friday compels us to consider the magnitude of Jesus's love and sacrifice and prepares our hearts for the joy of Easter.

About Me

Bible N3rd Pic.jpg

I started the fullness of my walk with Christ in 2019.  I can't believe how much it has changed my life and still how far I want to go.  I was never a "reader" but some chains fell off my life and I have spent so much of my time studying and learning.  It got to the point where I wanted to engage and share what I have made into a passion.  That is where this all started and I can't wait to see where God takes it!
